How does Green Design work?

I have a "Cradle to Cradle" philosophy—I don't just worry about what happens when the design piece has outlived its usefulness, but I like to plan for how it will be used again.

Web Design and Development

Web design seems pretty harmless; there's no physical materials created. However, web sites still need electricity to run, and the majority of power used is on the server end.

You always have the option to host you web site with any hosting company, but I highly recommend hosting with a "green" host—a company that uses green energy to power their data centre, like HostPapa.ca, a very good hosting company powered by clean energy.

I also offer the option of buying high-quality, certified carbon offset credits to offset your personal power usage.

Print Design

I use multiple strategies to cut down on waste and environmental impact:

• Only use FSC-certified and/or 100% post-consumer waste paper
• Where possible, I specify the use of vegetable-based inks
• My designs never use "bleed" or non-standard size paper so that there's no trimming and wasted paper
• I try not to use designs that use a lot of ink—I try to design around "full-flood" printing
• I am constantly researching new techniques and technologies to minimize our impact
